How to Stop Webcam Auto-Exposure (So You Don’t “Fade In and Out”)

Why it happens

Most webcams constantly adjust exposure and white balance when the background changes (monitor brightness, windows, LED lights). That makes your face brighten/dim repeatedly.

Fix it (fast)

  1. Add a steady key light (even a small desk light helps).
  2. Turn off “auto” settings in your webcam app (Logitech G HUB / Camera Settings, etc.).
  3. In OBS: set webcam to manual exposure and lock white balance.
  4. Reduce flicker/banding using the right frequency (50/60Hz).

If you’re seeing banding, use: Webcam Flicker Fix.

When it’s time to upgrade

Cheap webcams struggle in low light and will keep hunting exposure. Consider a better model (and set it up right): Best Webcams Under $80 (2026).
