Most people buy the wrong webcam for the wrong reason. Here’s the simple checklist that actually matters.
1) 1080p is enough for most people
For Zoom, Discord, and normal streaming, 1080p is the sweet spot. Don’t pay extra for 4K unless you know you need it.
2) Lighting matters more than the camera
If your room is dark or you’re backlit (window behind you), even an expensive webcam will look bad. Put a light in front of you.
3) Autofocus + exposure stability
Cheap webcams often “hunt” focus or constantly change brightness. That’s why some models feel more “pro” even at the same resolution.
4) Field of view (FOV)
- Narrow/normal FOV: best for calls (less background).
- Wide FOV: good for showing desk/workspace, but can look distorted.
5) Mounting
A webcam that slips off your monitor is a daily headache. Look for a stable clip or plan to use a small tripod.
